Reflexology

Reflexology, or zone therapy is an alternative medicine involving the physical act of applying pressure to the feet.  This is a practice involving stimulation through applying pressure to various
points and places on the feet. The various organs, nerves and glands in your body are connected to certain areas on the bottom of your feet such as the soles, toes and ankles.

The Reflexology Association of Canada defines reflexology as:

“A natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, hands and ears and their referral areas within zone related areas, which correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes without the use of tools, crèmes or lotions, the feet being the primary area of application, reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and helps promote the natural function of the related areas of the body.”

A treatment cleanses the body of toxins and impurities. It revitalizes our energy
both physically and mentally as energy circulates consciously and unconsciously throughout our system. When the body is well balanced it is in great shape and can more easily ward off any illnesses. Energy needs to be revitalized periodically. Reflexology is a great therapy to use as preventative health care.

Working or stimulating reflex points in the foot carries through the whole length of the body. This creates increased blood flow, circulation and oxygen to all of the cells in your body. Remember, feeling good is contagious. By reducing tensions and enabling the mind to relax we are able to be more creative, productive and work with more clarity at difficult tasks. Reflexology is the key to renewed vitality

Our certified reflexologist  creates a balance and a sense of renewal throughout the body. This is a perfect supplementation to treatments provided by Glen Shields Health Center.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage is a specialty massage using smooth, heated stones, most commonly basalt lava stones, a black volcanic rock that absorbs and retains heat well.

The water-heated stones come in various shapes and sizes, from tiny little stones that are placed between your toes to larger stones the therapist uses to massage your body.

The Hot Stones are placed at key points on the body to allow for deeper relaxation of the muscles.  The RMTs then incorporate a customized massage which can include Swedish massage and trigger point therapy with the use of Hot Stones.

Hot Stone therapy has the ability to provide deeper muscle and tissue relaxation, which in turn releases toxins and improves circulation, creating a healing and relaxing experience.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage therapy focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. The goals are to balance and decrease muscle tone, address postural concerns, and release chronic pain from muscles.

Deep tissue techniques are similar to those of Swedish massage, but the pressure is generally more intense, and designed for more focused and specific massage work.

By working a specific joint, muscle or muscle group, the practitioner can access deeper layers of the soft tissue. Starting superficially and easing into the depth of the muscle slowly often allows for more movement.

Sports Massage

Massage therapy has become an integral part of the athletic regime.

Massage therapy can add that extra edge to high performance athletes.  But you don’t have to be a professional athlete to benefit from massage therapy.  Whether you are active on a regular basis or are a weekend warrior, you will benefit with regular massage therapy treatments.

Sports massage can be performed before, during, or after an event.  It focuses on preparing the muscle tissue, relieving fatigue, and eliminating toxins that build up in muscles after prolonged use.  It also relieves muscle tension and joint pain, which can lead to injury, and decrease recovery times after major workouts.

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic massage can help you when you are injured, stressed, in chronic pain, or simply in need of a little relaxation and balance.

Physicians across Canada recommend therapeutic massage to

  • help decrease pain
  • improve range of motion
  • improve mood
  • aid in the circulation of blood and lymph flow
  • reduce muscle and joint soreness
  • improve sleep

Massage techniques most commonly include pressure and compression, kneading, frictioning and mobilizing to improve the health and condition of the muscles, tendons, skin, fascia or connective tissue of the body.

Relaxation Massage

Relaxation Massage helps to keep the body FREE from stress and illness.

This type of massage incorporates a smooth flowing style that promotes general relaxation, improves circulation, increases range of motion and relieves muscular tension.

Relaxation massage is essentially the same as a gentle Swedish massage.  Swedish massage uses a variety of smooth, gliding strokes, with some kneading or compression techniques, designed to ease muscle aches and tension.  The primary goal will be to promote relaxation, and the RMT will probably move at a slower pace and use lighter pressure.

There are substantial health benefits to a Relaxation/Swedish massage, including calming the nervous system, promoting a sense of well-being, improving blood circulation and stimulating the body’s lymphatic system, which carries away waste products.  The increase in circulation helps supply the skin and organs with more oxygen creating a relaxing effect on the body leading to improved sleep and digestion.

During a Relaxation massage there is less emphasis on working out serious adhesions or knots in the muscle tissue and the RMT will not push your pain limits in order to get the muscle to release. Sometimes people even fall asleep during a relaxation massage.

A Relaxation massage is beneficial for the body to receive on a regular basis as a way of achieving optimal health and well-being, as well as in times of great stress.  Relaxation/Swedish techniques can also be integrated into a Therapeutic Massage or Pregnancy Massage.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest medical procedures in the world. Acupuncture originated in China more than 2,000 years ago and gained exposure in America in 1970s, before being used in Canada. Chinese medicine theorizes that there are more than 2,000 acupuncture points in the body that connect with meridians to conduct energy between the body’s surface and the internal organs. Western medicine theorizes that acupuncture works by increasing body levels of endorphins. Acupuncture has been found to be very successful in controlling pain in patients with chronic migraines, back pain, joint specific muscle tightness and many other instances of chronic pain. many physical complains following a motor vehicle, workplace accidents or sports injuries.

Regular acupuncture treatments encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain, improve energy and mood, and improve the function of the affected area or body part. Acupuncture is safe and is often successfully used as an alternative to conventional medical treatment or even surgery. It can also be used in conjunction with traditional medical therapy

During acupuncture treatment, needles (disposable one-time-use sterilized needles) are either inserted for a second or two or left in place for up to 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the effect required. Insertion points are placed on the skin that have lower resistance to the passage of electricity than surrounding skin and can thus produce a therapeutic response. The needles are designed to slide smoothly through tissue making them unlikely to cause bleeding or damage underlying structures. No drug is injected at the needle site as the insertion of the needle alone is enough to produce a beneficial effect.
